Behind the
canvas
Reference & Inspiration
This painting draws inspiration from Filipina heritage across generations --- from the ancient Kalinga women, whose tattoos told stories of bravery, to the colonial-era Filipinas shaped by history, and finally to the modern woman who embraces her identity with pride.

Concept & Interpretation
Morena symbolizes the evolution of the Filipina spirit—a journey from cultural tradition to self-realization. The three figures represent the continuum of identity—past, present, and future. The transitions in color and style reflect the hues of the Filipino flag: red signifies courage and strength; yellow represents hope, enlightenment, and warmth of heritage; and blue embodies peace, depth, and resilience. By weaving these colors together, the painting honors the nation’s history while celebrating the Filipina’s enduring identity—a spirit both rooted in tradition and free expression.
